A failed project?

What do you think? I made this trupunto pumpkin for a friend and I loved it until I stuffed it. The stuffing strained the stitches and made the pumpkin misshapen. I cut the backing and pulled out stuffing, slicing some of the decorative stitching at the same time. Then I redid the stitching and mounted it, but I am very unhappy with how it turned out. I think I will start again and not stuff it this time. What do you think?

  1. I think it's very pretty! I love the monochromatic color scheme and the variety of stitches you used. I haven't tried it myself, but I understand this technique can be a bit tricky!

  2. Might be cheating, but what if you stitched the piece, except for the back stitched veins inside the pumpkin. Then cut a layer or two of batting ( perhaps one slightly smaller to go immediately behind the stitched fabric.) and positioned it behind the pumpkin. Then put on a backing fabric and stitch the pumpkin veins and outline again? That would give you the raised effect I think without straining your gorgeous specialty stitches inside the pumpkin. Just a though. I think this is beautiful as is, but we are always our worst critic and clearly this one bugs you and will every time you think of it.

  4. I think it looks pretty good. But then I don't know what it looked like before the repairs you made and don't know what your vision of the project was. But, mistakes in any activity short of life and death situations, offer us opportunities to learn. Do-overs offer us opportunities to figure out better ways to achieve our vision instead of settling for good enough. :)
